Our marching band right now is using instruments that are, at their youngest, nearly 20 years old - most desperately need to be replaced. In addition, rarely have they received the appropriate attention and maintenance that they need to remain functional, rendering most of them some level of broken. Anyone who has played an instrument before understands how difficult it can be to play in an ensemble with a broken or damaged instrument, and doubly so when the instrument has been deliberately damaged! Our percussion section is currently using a 35 year old xylophone screwed to a piece of particle board to keep it from disintegrating. Students are in desperate need of instruments to learn the fundamentals of being in a band - not just rhythm and reading notes, but understanding fundamental concepts like timbre differences and balance across sections. These concepts become infinitely more difficult to teach with nonfunctional instruments, and this marimba will help address one of the most pressing concerns. With this instrument, our percussion ensemble will actually have the basics of a pit percussion section, meaning our marching and concert seasons will have the bare minimum of what they need to play most basic band ensemble works. This provides for them invaluable performance experience and allows the ensemble as a whole to learn more about the "full band" sound and how to fit their individual instrument into it. This marimba will serve us for literal decades to come if taken care of properly, making this an investment that has the potential to impact multiple generations of the same families.
