My students are 100% Navajo and live on the Navajo Nation in rural New Mexico. All of them qualify for free breakfast and lunch at the school, and many go home to a house, trailer, or hogan that lacks electricity and running water. In addition to their schoolwork and up to an hour long commute to and from school each day, many of my students have a number of responsibilities at home. They face a number of physical, social, and emotional challenges, but they are resilient, and they are smart! They came to high school lacking a number of literacy and math skills that peers at other schools had, so now is the time to catch up. Students have three years to prepare for their graduation test and four years to prepare for college. They have big dreams of graduating and going to college, and I have been rejuvenated and humbled as my students and I strive to make these dreams a reality.
