Communication is a fundamental skill for academic success. My students have diverse communication needs, which requires that I create individualized communication supports such as alternative augmentative communication (AAC) picture boards to increase their understanding and use of language during social and academic tasks. None of my schools currently have a color printer/copier available to staff which has created a significant obstacle for me when it comes to creating individualized visual supports for my students. Color materials are not only more engaging for students, but also beneficial to increasing vocabulary and sentence complexity (e.g. color concepts for young children) and comprehension because color pictures better represent what the real-life object looks like. By being able to have the ability to create individualized materials such as social stories, communication boards, and visual aids, it will better support my students with their use and understanding of language in various school contexts. When students have something that they look forward to, it improves their engagement and motivation to learn (Lopez, 2013). All my students, ranging from preschool to middle school students, find technology extremely engaging. Using an iPad makes articulation, fluency, and language practice fun. As students improve and become self-motivated, they can use the iPad to independently practice their target skills. This iPad would be beneficial during small groups centers by allowing me to individually work with a student while keeping the rest of the group engaged in the lesson. The iPad could also be used to create social skills videos to teach students expected behaviors or for students to self-evaluate their fluency/articulation during a classroom presentation. The protective case would allow students to use the iPad without it getting damaged.
