Students have been spending the past few months working on an interdisciplinary project exploring their neighborhoods from a variety of different angles. In English class, they've been exploring how literary works have been shaped by the communities the authors lived or grew up in. Students have looked at how their neighborhoods have shaped their own identity and practiced expressing that in the vignette style. In their African American History class, they have been analyzing the impact that systemic racism (specifically, historical housing discrimination and mass incarceration) has had in shaping American cities. In their Biology and Health classes, students have been analyzing the effects that a neighborhood has on a person's health and biology. By utilizing a theme that they have a personal connection to, students have had the opportunity to develop a more thorough understanding of how social institutions shape society at the same time they have been learning about biological structures, all while practicing the skill of creative expression. Their final project will involve them writing a collection of fictional vignettes from the perspectives of different members of the community utilizing the content knowledge they've learned in history, biology and health. Just Mercy will provide them an additional perspective into the criminal justice system as it was experienced by the individuals involved in this case. They are familiar with the subject of the movie, Bryan Stevenson, as he has authored some of the source material they've used. However, this movie could also provide further insight into the efforts of Stevenson's Equal Justice Initiative. The movie may inspire some of their writing in their final projects, but, on a larger scale, hopefully inspire how they choose to carry themselves as American citizens throughout their adult lives.
