According to the work of Benjamin Maslow, basic needs such as feeling safe and secure, being fed, and feeling accepted must be met before a person can focus on higher activities, such as learning. The Zen Den is a way to address those Maslow needs in the 570+ young children on my campus. Research indicates that many children who live in poverty experience high rates of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) which have long-term impacts on their ability to learn and to regulate their behavior. Trying to teach needed skills while a child is in a heightened emotional state is not effective, and that is why we need a room designed to help our little ones calm down and feel safe, in order to teach the social-emotional skills that will then allow them to soar to academic heights. My vision for the Zen Den is gentle lighting to avoid the harsh fluorescent lights we use in institutional settings; soft furniture; and a variety of sensory items to assist the students with mind and body regulation. Please help give life to this vision.
