General Music is a course taught to all Ware Middle School students. While we have shared classroom instruments in the past, we will be unable to share materials neither between classrooms nor students within the same classroom due to COVID-19 safety and health guidelines. This setback will challenge our ability to study and participate in music in an active approach, which may leave students confused or disengaged. This altered environment prompts a need for each student to have a unique set of instruments. In order to keep students learning in meaningful ways, I would like to provide each student with a personal music kit for this school year. These music kits will not only provide necessary resources for music-making, but also the opportunity for each musician to create and discover music in a hands-on approach. These kits will help build confidence interacting with music be it through creating, responding, performing, or connecting. As these middle school musicians progress, their kits will offer them the ability to generate music both independently and in socially-distanced teams while assisting the development of musical skills. These kits will play many roles in the Ware Middle School music program. First and foremost, they will provide our students with accessible percussion materials such as rhythm sticks, sleigh bells, and sand blocks. This will enhance student investment as we study a variety of music concepts. Secondly, these kits will become a resource students may take home with them for virtual learning so they remain able to study music from home in an interactive manner. These materials will help provide memorable experiences for my students, fostering teamwork, musicianship, and safe socialization. Thank you for helping me to continue cultivating a joy for music and reinforcing a sense of togetherness while staying safely apart!
