We have a remarkable pool of talented, budding artists. Unfortunately, as is the case with many Chicago Public Schools, the majority of our students come from low-income households and have little to no exposure to art. As the new art teacher on the block, my proposal is "Sketchbooks for All." Keeping a sketchbook isn't only an outlet for creativity, but can be a cure for depression. Students need a safe space to set their minds free. Simply doodling in a sketchbook is freeing and great stress release. Middle school students can greatly benefit from having a haven to express themselves in a positive way.
