Creating a "literacy and learning lab," will eliminate the stigma attached to students receiving academic support outside of the general education classroom. It allows students the opportunity to receive instruction in a welcoming and inviting environment, designed with student learning styles and outcomes in mind. Modeled after a library with different forms of text, seating options and work spaces, students are able to collaborate with one another through engaging projects and station activities. Students today learn differently than previous generations. 21st century learners are expected to master skills in collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking and problem-solving, in addition to reading, mathematics and writing. In order to best meet the needs of our students, we need to adapt our classrooms to provide an environment where this type of learning can occur naturally. Children need to be engaged in lessons and the first step is finding materials that pique student interest and a space they want to visit. In order to accomplish this, various forms of text at multiple reading levels about a variety of topics will provide students with choices and help them gain ownership in their own education. Dry-erase tables will allow students to jot down ideas the minute they pop into their head and provide a visual workspace. Different seating options, including chairs, couches and an ottoman will increase student comfort in the classroom, especially when they are working on tasks that students perceive as difficult. My goal is to create a "safe space," where student accomplishments are celebrated and frustrations can be expressed openly and honestly. The best way to strengthen early literacy skills is through practice and experiences. By re-inventing the traditional "reading support classroom" and designing a "literacy and learning lab," students will be transported to a learning space fit for the 21st century.
