My students need the experience of feeling good about themselves. Being still and quiet and focused on a task they want to complete is good for them, but not what they get to do often. The opportunity to do a short and relaxing scratch art project will motivate them to behave better, complete ELA lessons, and can make a lasting impression. I think it will significantly improve classroom behavior. Our school is often chaotic and stressful, and it is difficult to get students to stay on task in ELA class. They are academically challenged and their personal needs are not being met in many ways outside of school. As the holidays get closer, I think my 6th grade students would love the opportunity to make something to give as a gift. They would benefit from the self-satisfaction of creating, in several ways on many levels, and I want to give them this experience and opportunity with a variety of scratch art materials.
