In today’s world, the stressors of daily life can cause children to feel frustrated, overwhelmed, and anxious. Classroom "Calm Spots" provides tools and skill-building strategies to help us manage stress and achieve emotional well-being throughout the day by activating the body’s relaxation response. When we’re feeling focused, relaxed, and energized, we are empowered. Not only will these students be learning techniques at school, but intrinsically, this self-awareness training will go wherever the child goes. The first virtual lesson I had my students complete during the COVID crisis was to create a "Calm Spot" at home so that students begin to practice what will be set up in each of their classrooms. "Calm Spots" provide our students and teachers with a positive proactive approach to addressing both the youthful energy and stressful anxiety that students regularly encounter. Relaxation response techniques and mindfulness-based interventions have long been recognized as effective strategies for managing the stress-related illness and enhancing psychological well being for everyone.
