My goal is to provide a calm and welcoming space for students to complete their work. I want students to feel like they are walking into a space that is just like home. I have seen it and it has been expressed to me by my students that they learn better and concentrate better when they are learning in a place that is comfortable to them. My typical day offers a lot of movement for 4th graders. Our classroom already offers them some flexible seating options and they are a hot commodity. So not everyone is able to use the space they want or even have an option. I want all students to have the opportunity to learn in a place where it feels best for them! Research has been done on the results of offering flexible seating in the classroom and it is beneficial to the classroom to include: It offers students choice in their environment. It offers students movement around the room. It offers them community and collaboration as it encourages them to take turns in different locations with different seating options. These are also great for group conversations and projects. It offers students comfort, when students are uncomfortable they are distracted and unproductive. I know this is not the opinion of everyone but I have seen the positive benefits this year in my class and I would like to continue to grow my selection for them and continue to make my class the most comfortable when they are away from home so I get the best of them!
