My classroom requires managing 24 students in a space adequate for 15. These SURF desks will be used to quickly create small groups, large groups, or independent learning opportunities in and out of the classroom. Students who have the freedom to choose where to sit have greater agency and are more productive because they feel trusted and respected. 70% of instructional time at our school is utilized for coached learning such as Socratic Seminar and group projects. The portable desks will aid in meeting our aims of creating independent and self-motivated learners. Finally, these types of desks can affordably be introduced throughout the school. They are sturdy and work well for students of all sizes.
