Our school is known for helping middle school students make tremendous achievement gains in math. One reason we are able to make a difference in our students' lives is that we have a unique math course that I help teach called Power Math. Power Math has been indispensible because it builds the essential foundation that many of our students are missing, and it gives them the "building blocks" that they need to be successful in middle school math. My students are motived to do well in class and to use their time wisely, not only because they enjoy learning and overcoming past struggles, but also because they get to do quiet free time activities with their friends if they successfully finish their work early. An activity that would greatly benefit my students would be to give them a chance to get creative with math through the use of LEGO building blocks, the same blocks that we used to love as kids. Working with LEGOs would reinforce many of the math concepts that we are learning in Power Math, including fractions, proportions, and geometry. Additionally, since using LEGOs is a fun group activity, students would learn how to have positive interactions with their peers, which is important for middle school students to learn. Using LEGOs would be a hit in my room, not only during class time, but outside of class time as well. During recess and lunch, students often ask to hang out in my room to chill with their friends, play board games, or just relax. Having the LEGOs in my classroom would provide many opportunities for students to both get creative with math and to have positive interactions with each other. Let's start building!
