When students, impacted by traumatic events, become overwhelmed, it can be very difficult for them to calm down or deescalate. Our therapeutic classroom will provide soothing environment where students can go to relax, regroup, and refocus. Our therapeutic classroom will have comfortable seating to help students relax, gentle lighting to help the students deescalate, hands on activities to help students refocus. We will use the therapeutic classroom first thing in the morning to reflect on how our day has begun and project how the remainder of our day will be. We will use the room for both group and individual therapy. When our students get overwhelmed in the academic environment, they can excuse themselves and go to the therapeutic classroom. We want this to be their safe place. The goals of our therapeutic classroom are to: help students maintain appropriate behavior, have a safe space to deescalate if they become overwhelmed, and ultimately stay in school instead of being suspended for displaying inappropriate behavior in the academic environment.
