Math is challenging for kids who do not have a strong foundation. Building that foundation and filling gaps from previous grades is vital. My role as an elementary math specialist allows me to focus on specific skills with small groups of students. Playing math games with my struggling students allows them to grow their math brains without the fear of failure. While playing, I am able to analyze individual knowledge gaps and misconceptions without students feeling anxious about being graded. I can provide immediate feedback and instant scaffolding within the context of the game. My students love the homemade games I have developed, but will be over the moon playing professionally created games!
