I have observed that students who are able to choose their own seats pair up easily, work more productively in small teams, and participate more during whole class lessons. Flexible seating gives students a choice which encourages them to take responsibility for their actions and decisions in the classroom. As students' sense of responsibility increases, so too does their focus on, and progress toward, learning goals. The use of tables instead of desks has resulted in the need for a space where student can keep their classroom materials and supplies. The cubbies requested will provide that space. Students will each have a personal canvas storage box that fits into the cubby and holds all their materials. The storage boxes will be easily transported when students make use of their flexible seating choices, as well as when they transition from class to class. The introduction of flexible seating has created an excitement in the classroom. I hope to create learning activities that will be driven by that excitement. The furniture requested will allow students to stay organized in this new classroom format.
