The brain is able to learn best when emotions are regulated. This can only happen when students feel safe, calm and cared for. This can be difficult to achieve when students are coming to school hungry or after having experienced a tragedy in their home life. It can be hard to achieve when students are struggling with a disability that makes it more challenging to regulate emotions. Students will use these materials to calm their bodies and minds so that they are able to remain in or return to the classroom to learn after a short period of time. My safe space helps keep students in school, where they are able to learn and continue overcoming their circumstances. Comfy beanbag chairs, stuffed animals, low lights because of light covers, and sensory tools help students to learn how to calm down under the hardest of circumstances. Students with autism struggle with sensory overload. Sensory tools and noise cancelling headphones can help them to re-center and be able to focus in school. Once calm, we are able to problem solve and return to class ready to learn again.
