My students have recently watched "Freedom Writers" and were inspired and moved by the film. They want our next reading to be something as inspiring that they can connect with. In the past, my students have shown great interest in the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, and many have chosen to write about him during student-choice writing assignments. The resources at my school are quite limited, and the novels currently available in the quantity I wound need for each student to be able to have their own copy to take home and read are mostly novels my students have already read in 6th grade, such as The Giver and Maniac McGee. I have chosen Dear Martin as it is a moving narrative my students can relate to and connect with. I hope to have these novels by February, to read for black history month. I have many activities I would like to do with this novel, and I would like to have my students end the unit by writing their own letters to Dr. King.
