I want my classroom to be a place where every individual feels safe and comfortable. Interacting in a small group setting builds trusting relationships between everyone in the class. These cooperative and caring relationships are the best way to promote motivation and learning. When students are active participants in the learning process like this, it will help them grow up to someday be active participants in a diverse, democratic society. I believe this growth can start in a 1st grade classroom when students are cooperating, collaborating, and problem-solving together when feeling safe and motivated. Using time in small group to instill values and life-skills will educate my students as we focus on the development of community, the importance of respect, and the preparation for life outside of the classroom. Having classroom furniture that is functional and allows students to feel comfortable is so important to a positive working environment!
