I am excited to share an authentic learning opportunity. As the cold temperatures are upon us, we begin to think more closely about energy use within our living spaces. Students are in the process of learning about heat transfer (conduction, convection, and radiation). A logical way to apply their understanding of heat transfer would be to make recommendations on how to save energy within their own living spaces! This project also has learning goals associated with the tenets of project-based learning (PBL). A PBL learning experience assesses students on their critical thinking skills, communication skills, collaboration skills, and their creativity. Since this project has an authentic application to the real world, students will be working in teams, and students will produce a public product, in this case, a 2020 calendar, available to residents of Franklin, which will include low, mid, and high cost energy efficiency solutions, as well as those that can be applied seasonally. By structuring it this way, the project will address all of these PBL tenets.
