The majority of items in this project include "My Dragon" books by Steve Herman and books by Julia Cook. These two authors focus on valuable social-emotional topics for each book, such as being respectful towards others, how to stand up to bullying, adopting a growth mindset and positive attitude, making friends, learning from mistakes, etc. The easy-to-follow writing and pictures in these books make them accessible to my students, many of whom struggle with reading, but are realistic enough for my older students to buy into the concepts. The remaining books in my project involve specific therapeutic technique workbooks which I will use with my students who suffer from mental illnesses, such as anxiety, depression, and conduct disorder. These workbooks provide hands-on activities that can be used by both students and their caregivers, something that is essential as in-school counseling is frequently the only mental health services they receive. Overall, the books and workbooks will grow our social-emotional library! The remaining supplies are for my kinesthetic learners who need movement to learn self-regulation skills. The yoga mats will be used in counseling sessions for a variety of movement-based coping strategies, including yoga, mindfulness, and progressive muscle relaxation. The thickness of the mats will allow the students to be comfortable while they listen to instruction or imitate my movements. Additionally, the flexible seating options will provide choices for those of my students who have difficulty sitting on the hard chairs provided by the school and help them to pay attention to counseling lessons.
