Teenage anxiety and depression are at an all-time high in the United States, which, in turn, fosters an environment of poor decision making practices which take the emphasis off accountability. Several problems arise daily at our high school. These daily problems include social media improprieties, relationship difficulties/harassment, rumors and gossip, cheating, stealing, racial and cultural confrontations, vandalism, classroom or extracurricular disputes, bullying, minor assaults and physical/verbal fighting. The Peer Mediation Club (Crew) will be another line of defense in aiding students to make and continue to make good decisions. Last school year, we responded to conflicts in classrooms in coordination with grade level assistant principals throughout the school year, and peer mediators kept a journal where they worked on their own time with 986 students throughout the school year to resolve verbal conflicts, physical altercations, and stress and anger issues. Our Peer Mediators are trying to create a Zen / Mindfulness / Calming Reflection Zone on each floor of our school to give students a chance to calm down and give them the stress/anger management tools to make positive decisions instead of making bad choices and regressing to physical and verbal aggression. Our Peer Mediators attended a week-long training session last summer on Restorative Justice Practices. They were also taught mindfulness skills that utilized the use of aroma therapy diffusers, small calming desk water fountains, zen gardens (tiny sandboxes) and the use of strategy thinking games such as Jenga and Connect 4 to help students strengthen self-regulation skills. “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." -Aristotle
