As a math teacher in a low-income district, at a small rural high school, incorporating technology into my instruction has been challenging. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but they all enjoy learning through technology-rich instruction. Today's high school students crave technology and active learning environments. Allowing my students to contribute to my instruction, via an iPad, allows them to become vested and engaged in the learning process. With an iPad and upgraded calculators, my students will benefit from exposure to current technology applications and real-world scenarios for an enriching learning experience. Through the iPad, students will be able to work problems in real-time in front of the class through my projector. This will allow the students to become more involved without the fear of going to the front of the classroom that many students face. I love the idea of the students being able to pass it to one another as their work appears for the entire class to see. I will also be able to use one of the many graphing or wonderful educational apps available in the app store to better prepare current and engaging lesson plans. Having newer calculators will also be an invaluable asset to students in my classroom. Many do not have the means to purchase their own graphing calculators. Being able to graph the many functions they are required to learn in my classes without the worry of sharing or borrowing from a neighbor can only help them succeed. With limited school funds, many of the calculators that are available in my class have faded buttons that cannot be read or screens with cracks or damage. The possibilities are endless in the ways this could bring my classroom into the 21st century!
