Students in the Emergency Medical Services program work side by side with EMT's and Paramedics while they are in the program. The educational experience is paramount to the knowledge and skills the students learn through out the year. Most of their clinical time is during the winter months. This poses a huge problem and concern. Not all of our students parents can afford to purchase a designated coat for their child to use for this clinical time. Most of the students are from low-income households. Students can not wear their everyday coat due to the possibility of getting something on it and most everyday coats are not high visibility. With the winters being harsh and sometimes unpredictable, students need to be safe and warm while they learn how to care for sick and injured patients. The EMS students would be able to be safe in conditions where high visibility coats are needed and warm during the winter months. Due to the high cost of these costs and wanting as many students to benefit from them, students will check them out on the day of their clinical time and return when the time is complete. The students will be responding to car accidents, medical patients, trauma patients and a wide range of emergencies that keep them out in the elements. As a mother myself and their teacher, I believe these coats would provide safety, warmth, and pride.
