A student centered classroom allows students, as stakeholders in their own education, to make decisions about their instruction. Empowering students to make decisions about their learning environment grants them a vested interest in learning growth. Providing flexible seating for students is a research-based strategy for promoting learning engagement in a student centered classroom. Many students become restless having to sit in a desk for the entire class period, specifically when working collaboratively. Providing the option of standing and working at a desk specifically designed for this is ergonomically safer and less straining than standing at a desk designed for sitting.
