The Breathe for Change program is a researched based curriculum designed by educators for educators promoting the cultivation and preservation a positive connection students have with peers, community, and with their selves. Over the years, I have come to realize that the traditional trainings and education I received in college and by the district did not prepare me or provide me with the tools I required to best serve my students. Many of my students battle daily with situations beyond their control. I find myself often struggling with how to help my kids. I've spent nights researching methods on how to give my students what they need, confidence in themselves, a quiet mind, and a safe place mentally. I realized I needed to learn how to help them develop a more positive outlook, a wholesome sense of self, and an ability to persevere. I have spent years looking for healthy ways to handle the stresses of life while balancing a busy lifestyle. Eventually, stumbling on meditation, mindfulness, and yoga. The effects these pactices had on my mental health and lifestyle were unbelievable. I was showing up for my own life and career. Thinking about my students, there are many days where the desks are full, but my room is nearly empty. Breathe for Change offers a pathway that my students and school needs. It is a program that acknowledges there is connection between teacher and student mental/emotional wellness and student learning. It empowers students through their teachers by giving educators the tools to create a positive space and practices that focuses on methods that help students calm their own minds. I am positive that this training will equip me with strategies that will help me move my students, co-workers, and community forward into a more holistic understanding
