We would like to invite poet Eric Morago into the classroom to run a ten week workshop in which students read a collection of poetry, study form, rhythm, image, tone, and voice, and develop their craft of writing. Eric is a published poet who holds an M.F.A. in Creative Writing (CSULB), is a Pushcart Prize nominee, and is a recipient of the Idyllwild Arts Poetry Fellowship. He has extensive experience working in schools as a visiting poet, guest lecturer, and workshop instructor. He has performed in venues all over Southern California and is an award winning Poetry Slam competitor. (http://ericmorago.wixsite.com/poet) The teacher-artist will work with our awesome tenth grade English students, meeting with each class for ten class periods. Students will delve into a collection of poetry to understand how using an artistic voice can impact society. They will gain a better understanding of themselves and their peers through their creative writing and they will consider “who they are” and “why they are.” By performing their poetry our students will gain the earned confidence that comes with public speaking. Through hearing each other’s voices, both poetic and artistic, our students will understand that not everyone has the same point of view, thus affording them an opportunity to practice acceptance and tolerance. Poets will then work with 132 Photography students to share a vision of the poem and the artist will interpret that vision through photographs which will be projected during the poetry performance. On June 3rd, 2020, students will board buses after lunch to allow time for an on-stage rehearsal and a tour of Whittier College before the performance. The workshop will culminate in a spoken word performance at the Ruth B. Shannon Center on the Whittier College campus entitled “A Night of Spoken Word.”
