The scholars at our school have access to a multitude of digital information sources, many of which are authored by biased and unreliable individuals and special-interest groups. Social media, although valuable when used appropriately, exposes these young adults to an endless variety of news, statistics, and information presented as “fact”. With an ever-growing list of state-mandated subject-area standards to be covered by teachers, explicit instruction on the evaluation of digital information and the sources from which information originates does not always occur. Operation Evaluation, to be funded with this grant, will unify the use of technology (Chromebooks) to support scholarly learning, while simultaneously providing an opportunity for scholars to engage in the critical evaluation of digital sources. Operation Evaluation will empower our future leaders, teachers, and athletes to meticulously review data and news from various sources in order to develop conclusions based on evidence and facts, rather than on media bias and the opinions of public figures. With digital information so readily available, evaluation of data is so critical in the development of young adults who exemplify integrity and community responsibility. It is said that “knowledge will forever govern ignorance”, and without being able to discern between factual and opinionated information, knowledge of any kind cannot achieve its maximum value.
