Remember what it was like to be 12 and 13 years old? Remember being awkward? Remember wanting people to like you and doing things that you thought would help that effort? Remember feeling like people didn't like you? For many adults now, those awkward years are just a memory--there is no social media account of the trials and tribulations of being a young teen. In today's world, our students' pitfalls are captured and published, and the embarrassment we felt as kids at remembering what happened is magnified for today’s youth by seeing it again and again on social media and dealing with the multitude of comments that make fun of and remind them that they’re awkward. This project will focus on quality time with families instead of on individual or collective device time. My students will spend 24 hours device-free (no phones, iPods, iPads, computers) playing games and spending outdoor time with their families. The games provided are board games or outside games, and the students will document their FODO OPPORTUNITY time using an instant camera (no phone cameras). The pictures they take, capturing this quality time, will be incorporated into a photo essay. Students will share their experiences of being without their devices through their essays. This generation of middle schoolers has not lived life without cell phones and other portable electronic devices as part of their everyday lives. I want them to experience it!
