Engaging students in the math process is the key to their success. Many of my students are uncomfortable working with others and sit silently at a desk, or become fidgety from sitting all day long and struggle to pay attention. Providing a way to get them up and working with others is the first step to developing problem solving skills through collaboration. Flexible seating creates an inviting feel to a classroom, allows movement and encourages collaboration. It's challenging for anyone to sit for hours at at time. All you have to do is sit at an all day meeting to understand the discomfort and tiredness that come with prolonged sitting. For my 14 year old students, it's next to impossible. As an experiment, I borrowed four stability balls to replace chairs in the classroom. It was a huge success. Even the small movement that sitting on the balls provides has helped with student focus and the more inviting setting has encouraged students to interact with others on daily assignments. Students run to class to claim one of the borrowed balls and have asked if we could get more. I want to do whatever possible to create a space where students want to learn and feel comfortable. and flexible seating though the use of stability balls is an effective way to accomplish this.
