Even in upper grades, picture books are shown to have a huge impact on students and their learning. Through picture books, students build vocabulary, comprehension skills, and a love for reading. Picture books provide great background knowledge prior to diving into a more detailed lesson, and can ease students into conversations about more difficult topics. With these books, students will discover different cultures, themes, and ways of living. This is essential for our large English language learner population in our school, but is beneficial for all students. These books will help students learn about different genres and guide them to subjects they may not have chosen on their own. Reading a book aloud to students models fluent reading, builds awareness and improves long term reading success. Each day, our class will set aside a few minutes to read and discuss ideas in a new picture book. Some days will be purely for the enjoyment of reading, some days will allow us to discuss historical figures and events. Other days will have us focusing on new topics to study and addressing social issues that impact daily life. I want my students to walk away from the book a day project and not just have a better vocabulary and learn about new authors, but to also know more about themselves and have a more empathetic view to the world around them.
