As counselors, much of our work is conducted virtually or remotely. Students are able to connect with us via Google Classroom and Google Phone (by using our computers for calls and texts). Text messaging is, by far, students' preferred way to communicate. In the past year, we have had a greater need to connect with students outside of normal building walls. That leads to a greater need for portable technology. Students will be able to access their school counselor while at school or at home to ask questions, seek guidance, or get supportive services. Also, this technology allows the school counselor to participate in the classroom by providing lessons on college and career readiness, goal setting, mental health care, coping skills, anger management, etc. Students will be more successful in navigating their high school experience, emotionally and academically, and more prepared for life after high school, whether it be entering the workforce or post-secondary education. A laptop computer is essential to successfully counsel and support the needs of these students. Especially in these uncertain times, students need a stable support system. A standing desk also allows for the counselor to travel to meet students and limit large group contact. Being mobile is vital to the successful support of the new generation of student.
