My students are fortunate to have 1:1 Chromebooks. Learning English requires students to not just hear English but also utilize it in speech and writing. In order to do this for 26 students, whole group instruction can not always occur. It is commonly accepted in second language acquisition theory that students need to utilize a word 30 times before they gain that new vocabulary word. Low-income students alone enter Kindergarten with a million work English gap. My students are entering fourth and fifth grade or stepping foot in a school for the first time in their lives. In order to best serve these students, technology needs to be utilized to differentiate the learning experience of every student. English language acquisition programs strive to create the personalized instruction that every student needs. Through fun activities and game-like simulations, students are acquiring English and then transferring the things they are learning to the classroom and school community. Further, these headphones are used in so many more ways that what might be perceived. Students can listen to books on programs like Epic, read books that are recorded for me to hear on Imagine, watch short clips and record their reactions and then follow it up by talking with a buddy from another classroom about what they have learned. Every student's headphones are noise-canceling so that every student can listen and learn while I can listen to how they are speaking through the computer's ability to voice-record. Through this tool, I can utilize programs to help me comfortably develop data-driven practice and examine who needs more help with what particular skill.
