My greatest challenge as an English/language arts teacher is to convince my students to add reading to their list of extracurricular activities. This can be a hard sell to adolescents who are all-consumed by smartphones, Snapchat, and videogames. I have a limited selection of books to choose from in our school book room, and while everyone still loves The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, many are not so thrilled when presented with an outdated copy of some of the lesser known titles we have available. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and The Hate U Give are two novels that my students request we read as a class. Unfortunately, our district budget money has been frozen, so there is no chance that I would be able to make a purchase request through the school department. These two novels have wide appeal with all learners because they can empathize with the main characters in these stories. Despite the odds that each modern-day protagonist is up against, they make education the number one priority in their lives - something I want my students to do too.
