So much research has shown the critical need to support social emotional learning for students. "Social emotional learning programs increase academic achievement and positive social interactions, and decrease negative outcomes in life. Social emotional learning helps individuals develop competencies that last a lifetime." My students love reading and listening to stories. I am requesting children literature to teach social emotional skills that will help my students to cope with everyday challenges, especially the factors outside of the school that they have no control over. These high quality texts include characters and emotions that students can connect to. Additionally, deep discussions can take place during restorative justice circles to encourage students to develop empathy, help them think deeply about their feelings, and learn new ways to solve problems.
