We know that students that are not self-regulated cannot learn. Many students that we work with come from homes where they are under exposed to stimuli or they have experienced trauma. Their young brains are not equipped to deal with over-stimulation or upset. Sensory experiences allow our students to calm and deescalate. With the help of a sensory wall, chew necklaces, and fidgets students will be able to self-regulate as needed. This will allow them to focus, attend to task, and engage with peers. By providing sensory experiences at an early age to assist with self-regulation it will lead to future academic success.
