Small group learning is most effective in third grade. Students learn with their group different strategies and ideas which guide them to deeper concepts. Students use small group strategies to guide further learning and practice concepts individually or with a partner. When working in partners or independently, students focus best when they have a focus zone. When small groups of 5-6 break into smaller groups of 1-3 to focus on learning concepts, it is amazing how well students will focus when given the "right" seating. My classroom has a 5x7 carpet which is wonderful, and I know the individualized seats will aide student focus. With books and puzzles to inspire, students will thrive in small/individualized groups.
