In my Anatomy & Physiology class, students learn about the human body through the application of content, including dissections, field trips, modeling, guest lectures, and engineering design challenges. This field trip provides a unique opportunity to view neurosurgery as it is happening, and ask questions of the neurosurgeon afterward! Rather than simply learning about the brain through diagrams in a book, 3D models, and a sheep brain dissection, we will be able to see what it's like when surgery occurs on the human brain! This field is one of the leading aspects of research on the human body, and opportunities to view a live surgery as it is occurring are nearly unheard of until students are far into medical school. For students who are planning on taking that path, this experience will give them a preview of what is yet to come. For students who are not inclined to medical school, this experience will give them a view of what it's like to be the surgeon and learn from a different perspective than most patients and humans ever have exposure to.
