The addition of the book The Color Purple to our AP classroom Lit circles will help in broadening the selection of diverse authors and stories my students have access to. In a Literature and Composition classroom, it is important for students to have exposure to a multitude of different genres and cultures as they analyze and learn through literature. The library at our school has a very limited amount of class sets of books, and the class sets which are available do not necessarily reflect a diverse array of experiences. Students need exposure to cultural diversity in literature which illuminates the similarities and differences in people, educating them about our unique and yet shared humanity. Access to books is something that seems so basic, and yet is often very hard to attain in a public school setting.
