As a first grade teacher, I have to find ways to make learning engaging and enjoyable for six year olds. Worksheets just aren't cutting it, but manipulatives and learning games are expensive. For this project, I selected materials that I can use in many different ways such as morning work, social skills, mathematics, and language arts. The main reason I want these items is so that I can implement "soft starts" in my classroom, meaning that instead of coming into the classroom and getting right to work at their desks in silence, students would have a chance to socialize with classmates while exploring the manipluatives. This productive play not only gives them the opportunity to practice social skills, but it can be a positive way to begin the school day for students who might not have started off their mornings in the most positive environments. Additionally, having a chance to play with the materials makes them less distracted later on during instruction. Having these materials would be so positive for both me and my students! Please help me build up my classroom materials so that I can give my students, this year and in the years to come, the best and most impactful school experience possible!
