Items to meet students' sensory needs, rewards to support a positive behavior system, and materials for organization to decrease visual overstimulation will greatly increase students' opportunities for success. All students in my classroom struggle to learn more than the average student their age, and the items requested will greatly increase their opportunity to regain calm, stay focused, and stay motivated in order to be their best selves. Items such as the shaggy rug, sequin pillow, liquid timers, and stress balls will be included in our peaceful corner, an area students use to calm down after behavioral escalation. Items such as the slant board, theraputty, and tactile letter cards will be used to address the needs of students with sensory and physical issues and have been recommended by the occupational therapists for those students. Evidence-based research supports positive behavioral intervention systems to increase motivation and decrease non-preferred behaviors, especially in students with disabilities. I have extensive training and experience in implementing these systems. Motivators/ rewards, such as glitter notebooks, glitter pencils, and glow-in-the-dark rings, are based on my students' interests and align to the system I have in place in the classroom. Most students in my classroom have extreme difficulty focusing in order to learn. Students in my classroom have disabilities and diagnoses that cause a decrease in focus when they are overstimulated visually, auditorily, and in other ways. A vibrant, successful learning environment requires many materials. Items such as paper organizers, desk supplies trays, pocket charts, and labels will greatly decrease clutter and visual overstimulation. All of the materials requested will remove obstacles and increase productivity for students who are significantly below grade level and experience many roadblocks to learning based on physical, emotional, and cognitive issues beyond their control. I am truly grateful for your support.
