In my class we strive to complete the same novel studies as their grade level peers, but cognitively they struggle with being able to independently read and understand the content due to their various learning disabilities. When hearing the stories read aloud, it allows the students a better opportunity to grasp the material being presented as well as broaden their vocabulary and content familiarity. The students in my class are cognitively too intelligent for the full time special needs self contained room but not cognitively adaptive enough survive in a general education classroom. The students strive to fit in with their age appropriate peers, but realize they are different. By allowing them audio books to have better access to grade level novels the other students are discussing, it gives them a sense of belonging and normalcy. The students currently are begging to read the story "Ready Player One" which is at a reading level equivalent to a sixth grade seventh month student. My students are reading fluently at an average between a second to fourth grade student.
