Wooden unit blocks have been in preschool classrooms for decades. They are a time tested, versatile, and very powerful tool for learning. Every area of child development can be addressed during block play. Children are using their fine and gross motor skills when lifting and positioning blocks. Visual spatial skills are developed when building bridges, towers and other structures. Children develop language skills as they write labels for their structures and share what they have created with peers and adults. Children work together, developing social/emotional skills through block play opportunities. The design of the blocks themselves supports the development of math concepts as the unit block is the basis for all of the other shapes. There is a half unit square, a double unit big rectangle, and a quadruple unit rectangle. Then there are triangles made from each of the rectangles. There are cylinders with two diameters and heights directly related to each other. The potential for these tools to benefit our children is limitless.
