Due to COVID-19, our students have missed out on so many of their early learning opportunities. Many of my Kindergarteners did not have a preschool or pre-k experience. As educators, it is our job to fill in those gaps and provide students with the materials needed for success. I would love to incorporate more sensory play in the classroom. My plan is to create Sensory kits that can be changed out monthly. In order to create these kits I will need items such as storage containers, sensory sand, rice, digging utensils, Pom poms, play doh, stones, number/alphabet items, etc. Sensory play has proved to help with the following things: - Builds nerve connections in the brain that enable a child to complete more complex learning tasks. -Supports language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem-solving skills, and social interaction. -Helps to calm children that are anxious or frustrated. -Allows kids to learn different sensory attributes such as cold, sticky, dry, wet, rough, smooth, etc. -Develops an awareness of the senses through hands-on learning. Perhaps the best part about sensory play is that it provides an opportunity for every child to succeed. All children can find comfort and fun in sensory play!
