In a classroom focused on sensory needs, it is important to have furniture that matches the needs of the students. Many of the students need an outlet for movement during large group and individual time. Lessons are designed in a workshop model where they participate in both large group learning at the carpet, individual/partner time at their seats, and a share out within the classroom community. Flexible seating will help students take ownership of their needs as learners. If the classroom were to be full of seating options that support movement and comfort in all areas in the classroom, then they can engage and focus more on their learning at all times. The wiggle cushions and soft seats would help students engage in lessons throughout the day but especially those that take place at the carpet. Right now, in order for students to get their needs met, they are having to ask for a break to leave the lesson to get their wiggles out. This means they are missing some of the valuable learning time, as well as, time to build community and relationships with their peers. The wiggle stools and stability balls would be great options for students to choose during independent/partner work time. Again, the flexible seating designed for movement would allow them to participate in their own learning longer and help them engage with the lesson more. A classroom designed to make all learners feel embraced, comfortable, and successful is the type of environment I would love them to be apart of.
