All students these days are inundated by online content from social media. This makes it harder for teachers to create quality conversations in class. For my dual language learners, fostering meaningful conversation is especially important. They need to speak, write, read, and listen to the language as much as they can to become better academic learners. The best way I have found to accomplish these conversations is through daily collaborative work. To that end, I am designing my classroom to be more interactive. All the walls will be set up with dry-erase boards for mobile activities in class. Students will be able to read, analyze, comment, and talk about each other’s work with much more accessibility. The boards will be movable so exemplary work or challenges to overcome can be brought to the front of the room. We also need a standing presentation table with a microphone where students can present their work or use a computer to present content (currently the computer while they present). I believe redesigning my room in this way will create a positive classroom culture where students are confident and excited to learn. Collaboration is such a huge part of higher education and essential in career readiness. Whatever we can do to empower students to be more collaborative will not only help them in my math class but will give them life skills that they will carry with them.
