While our team talks and discusses with our students about these paramount functional skills needed to become fully independent for life after school, they also need a place to practice and implement the skills and strategies discussed. The products that our team has selected will help our students by creating their own mini home lab within our school. Within this lab our students will be able to acquire, maintain, and eventually generalize these functional skills taught in the classroom and use them in their own home and personal lives. Functional skills include washing and folding clothes, making the bed, washing dishes, setting the table, appropriate social-table conversations, vacuuming, etc. Our students will be encouraged to make this lab feel like their own home, by allowing them to decorate and design the room with decor and trimmings of their personal preference. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them to participate and take ownership over the lab, creating a sense of autonomy.
