This year, I decided to provide my students with more than one option for their Day of the Dead projects. Not every student has an artistic bent, which is why I've chosen to differentiate each project based on their artistic level. There are many details that go into making a Day of the Dead project a memorable one. Every attention to detail is important. Thus, having adequate decorative elements to choose from, helps bring out their creative side. Novice Artist: Students draw and paint on a blank canvas. They might require a stencil to paint over. The second option is to create a memory box from paper that is already outlined for them. They will add additional elements to make unique. Intermediate Artist: Students design a frame to commemorate their loved one. They will add paint and other 3D decorative elements. They can also choose to paint and design a blank foam sugar skull. Advanced Artist: Instead of creating the traditional shoebox, students will create a book box. They will decorate the outside and inside of the box with objects and elements that represent the person they are commemorating. All of these projects will be displayed at our school altar. Our Spanish students will also participate in a mini Day of the Dead exhibit. They will be able to share more about their projects with other students and teachers.
