Our yoga mats have recently been stolen out of the dance room where we store some of our equipment. Due to the various mobility needs my students have, we relied on doing yoga twice a week in an effort to increase our stability and our flexibility. One student has reported that he falls less due to his increased flexibility! In additional to stability and flexibility, yoga is a great tool that provides body awareness. Students with gross motor delays have learned how their body's operate in space, leading to a more active lifestyle in and out of the classroom. In addition to yoga mats, students enjoy watching yoga videos through the use of a projector. The projector we use is old and outdated. My students don't have the best vision and the use of this older projector has them straining, leading them to check out of our planned activity. I would like to get them a new projector that is sensitive to their eyesight while being visually appealing. Additionally, the use of a video allows me to go around the classroom and provide modifications and adaptations where appropriate. It truly helps my ability to appropriately teach a class of students with diverse needs. The other items listed would help me and my staff appropriately support the severe population of students we work with. For example, latex free gloves to help with changing and transporting students in and out of wheelchairs. Hand sanitizer will help keep the students and staff germ free during the cold and flu seasons. Additionally, balloons and beach balls are fun and easy to use implements for students with gross motor delays!
