When you read children's books, do you see yourself? Can you relate to the black child buying candy at the store? Can you see yourself in the Asian girl reading a book at the library? Or, the Latino boy playing soccer in a field? Unfortunately, many of our bookshelves are filled with books where the leading characters are white. When our students read books, we want them to be able to relate, to be able to see themselves. We want them to see themselves in the black child, the Asian child, the Latino child, etc. By helping us fill our bookshelves with books that our kids can see themselves in, you will help them discover themselves, you'll help them wonder and you'll help them build their dreams.
